Delhi CM spells out her priorities
News Category: Activism; Source: www.cities.expressindia.com; Date: 15/12/2003

Delhi government will give priority to infrastructure, such as roads, transport, water and power.

On the first day of her second term as chief minister, Sheila Dikshit said that splitting up Municipal Corporation of Delhi into smaller, managable divisions will be one of her foremost priorities.

The govenment is planning to implement the decision in the next couple of months, sources said. The Assembly session in March is likely to take up this issue with great earnest.

Dikshit said pollution in River Yamuna is another problem which she intends to tackle on a war footing. ''The river pollution bothers me. About 17-18 drains which flow into the river need to be handled,'' she said.

She emphasised that the ongoing projects in Delhi, which are incomplete and have been going slow, will be expedited. She mentioned the Dhaula Kuan flyover and Sonia Vihar water treatment plant as two such projects. They should be completed by March next year, said Dikshit.

The statehood issue also figures in her list of commitments. The chief minister said that the promises made in the party manifesto will be closely studied and a schedule will be prepared to implement them. The manifesto is currently being studied by top bureucrats, officials said.

Dikshit met senior government officials in the afternoon and asked them to outline priority areas. She told the bureacrats about her vision to make Delhi a global city and give priority to infrastructure like roads, transport, water and power.

She said the government's huge mandate means rising expectations of people from Delhi. It was necessary, she told the officers, that earlier achievements in the fields of good governance (Bhagidari), information technology, power and environment be followed up.

Dikshit asked them to review their systems and procedures and ensure that governance was people-centric.
