Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is a dangerous plastic, considered the most toxic of all plastics. The raw material used in its manufacture is Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM), a potent carcinogen which causes serious health damage.
Chemplast, a Chennai-based plastics major, proposed a 1,70,000 tonne PVC resin manufacturing facility in Cuddalore (Tamil Nadu) with financial assistance FROM the International Finance Corporation. Due to strong community opposition and widespread campaign support FROM a coalition of NGOs led by Toxics Link, CorpWatch India and FEDCOT, the plant has now been shifted to an alternate site. |
