Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that can affect the brain, spinal cord, kidneys and liver.

Toxics Link has released a detailed study on the usage of mercury in hospitals. This report also covers the disposal patterns, awareness of its hazards amongst the staff particularly the nurses, government policies and international trends. The other documents realeased are a poster on mercury management, and an information flyer for hospitals as well as for dentists.

The first open ended working group meeting held in Bangkok on November 12,2007 reached a consensus on ways to face challenges posed by Mercury and its threats to human health and environment. The meeting also discussed voluntary measures and new or existing international legal binding treaty as possible options to tackle the mercury related problems. The article takes a close watch on the debates at the meeting.

The dangers of mercury exposure are now been recognised globally, particularly its role as a health hazard to the medical staff. Though hospitals alone are not the top source of mercury release in the environment but their large variety of uses for mercury containing equipment/ items pose dangers to a greater extent as compared to other sources. The article highlights the hazards mercury poses to those in the health care sector and suggests ways to handle the element safely.
