India’s battle with managing E-waste reached a new level, with the issuance of Draft E-waste by Ministry of Environment and Forest in May 2010.
This is a welcome step. But Toxics Link, which has been campaigning for such a separate rule for several years, feel that the rules focus too much on helping ‘business’ and less on tackling environmental impacts.

A two Judge bench of the Indian Supreme Court of India, on 20th July, 2010, quashed[1] the criminal defamation case against 11 activists initiated by the Crop Care Federation (formerly Pesticides Associations of India, a consortium of pesticide manufacturing companies).

SAGE Publications in association with Oxford Bookstore, New Delhi and Toxics Link today launched the book ‘Our Toxic World: A guide to hazardous substances in our everyday lives’ compiled and scripted by Aniruddha Sen Gupta, eminent author with illustrations by Priya Kuriyan, renowned animator and film maker. The book was released by Krishnendu Bose, renowned documentary filmmaker, in the presence of well known Educators like Chhanda Bose and Aporajito Bose, Graphic novelists Orijit Sen and Sarnath Banerjee and Environmentalist Ravi Agarwal. The launch was followed by a panel discussion and interactive session on ‘Environmental issues’ with the audiences present at the event.

One –third of the healthcare facilities in Uttarakhand are not registered. They are also running out of compliance with regard to biomedical waste management and handling rules, 1998. Due to reasons known only to the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, a recycling plant, barely a year old based out of Rajpur Industrial Area in Roorkie, under the name of M/s Attero Pvt Ltd, has been given permission for import of 8000 MT of hazardous E-waste from UK and USA. Now the over 10 to 15 recyclers who have recently started operating in India, all of them with hardly any installed capacity, are trying to get import permissions based on this clearance
