E-Waste Management in Gurgaon

 
Gurgaon, in last decade or so, has emerged as a major business center, being part of the National Capital Region. Many corporates, business houses, including BPOs, Banks, IT companies have their office in Gurgaon, which is now one of the India’s prime information technology and IT-enabled service hubs. The growth in the city has fuelled in greater consumption and waste generation of Electronics, without adequate infrastructure to deal with this toxic waste. Electronic and Electrical equipments have become a part of our everyday life in recent times and its use has increased manifold in the last two decade. Though it has brought technology to common man, there is a downside.

To reflect and have a discussion a One-day Workshop on “E-Waste (Electronic-Waste) Management in Gurgaon” on 15th of December, 2011 at Epi Center, Gurgaon was organized by Toxics Link. The core objective was to facilitate discussions and information exchange on E-waste management among the key stakeholders in Gurgaon. The workshop aims to discuss the issue and develop wider understanding of practices on E-waste management in the city and the state of Haryana.

E-waste is emerging as a critical waste issue in India, with the growing quantity of waste and the concerns arising out of the toxic nature of this waste. There is growing recognition of the E-waste problem in India at the national level and the Ministry of Environment and Forest has recently notified E-Waste (Handling and Management) Rules, 2011, which will become effective from May 2012. Satish Sinha (Associate Director, Toxics Link) said, “The Electronic Waste rules be effective from May, 2012 and it will be critical for all stakeholder to come together and set up systems to comply with the rules.”

The eminent speakers were: B.Vinod Babu (Scientist ‘D’& Scientist ‘D’ & Incharge, Hazwaste Division, Central Pollution Control Board), Arjun Balakrishnan (Director, Panasonic India), Deepak Ohlyan ( Executive Director, Dell India), Rachna Arora (Technical Expert, GIZ-ASEM), Sanjay Saxena (CEO, Greenscape Eco Management), Satish Sinha (Associate Director, Toxics Link), Priti Mahesh (Project Manager, Toxics Link)

The B. Vinod Babu focused on the proper dismantling and recycling processes by not wasting the resources. Recovery of e-waste management is very important to look after. Mr. Babu also talked about the transparent mechanism to put the collection centre around the country along with the huge responsibility of collection centre.

More than 60 members from Central Pollution Control Board, Corporates like Panasonic India, Dell, Samsung, Nokia, Wipro, HP and bulk user companies, prominent recyclers in the region. shared and actively participated during the sessions.
